For a quick check to make sure which values are actually used by the OSTC, one can use the deco calculator: in the left column of the results page the active S/D values are shown. These are the values that will also be used in dive mode.

The safest way would be to just SLOWLY ascent on the final, e.g. with 1 meter/minute for the last 5 meters or so. But many divers unfortunately aren't able to do that or were never trained to do that, so the "safety stop" was invented... If you are on air, this stop should be rather shallo...

The safety stop arms once a depth of 10 meters is crossed and then shows up on reaching 5 meters. It disappears after either 3 minutes or passing 3 meters. These numbers can be changed, but only with external software (i.e. not from within the OSTC menu).

yes, there is: put the OSTC in an air-tight plastic box, press down the cap while venting air out of the box, then fully close the box and release the pressure from the cap such that it starts to draw some negative pressure. This will cause the OSTC to "surface".
