Why is the computer then counting NDL? (:P)

I would also like to have this function removed - it absolutely makes no sense (especially in the way it is implemented right now...) but a better implementation needs more cf's. On the other hand I am absolutely against the option to use more cf's for this ridicolous function. Stopwatch and brain should really be enough here!

Ok, remove all decompression functions and turn the OSTC into an Bottom-timer. That's way enough for someone who uses the brain... 8-)

I don't care about your sorrow about wasting CF's! We have 2/3 of all CF's which do not affect the diveprofile or decocalculation, like battery color, text color and so on...

I personally like the safety stop feature and will use it as is. I bought the OSTC 2N as I suspect quite a few people did as an option that allows NDL diving with the ability to move to technical (and possibly CCR) diving. The reasons for my choice include the screen which allows for easy viewing both day and night, open source and frequent updates of the software.

Even though I am now doing more technical diving I still mix it with NDL diving and I suspect I'll be doing even more NDL diving as my daughter is about to start her OW course. The idea of a computer is to aid in diving wherever possible and I find it hard to understand why people get so animated about technical versus recreational computer. There is no reason for a computer not to be suitable for both.

As to the use of CFs to enable a broader implementation as requested by lots of users it only requires one more CF. Change the current CF from safety stop on/off to safety stop time (0 = off) and a second to safety stop depth.

Then, a few dozen pages of discussion followed, we got angry emails from both parties. This topic really splits the group here...

Hi all,

HW has involved the request of the Safety Stop. I think it is as good as it is, and you should finish the discussions here.

Hello,

maybe two firmware versions will stop this discussion, one with safety stop and one without safety stop.

sarcasm on:
Or maybe we need an additional sport diver firmware without Trimix and without CCR functionality but with safety stop, so basically a frog and a MK2 in one case.
Then you have to load whatever firmware is required for the planned dive.
sarcasm off:

@Reiner,

if you don't need the saftey stop, turn it off!!!

I think it's good to have a computer which I can use for all aspects of diving

This is going well beyond the joke.

Actually I think HW should make custom FW available for individual users at a fee.
Let say at 50 Euro per FW release a OSTC user can have his own personal FW.

What do you reckon Matthias?

This is exactly what I proposed, since I struggle finding hardcoded stop 5m/3' as useful for all aspects of diving. It is of same use as a trimix computer with 3 predefined trimix mixes, all of them normoxic (this is a purposefully exaggerated theoretical example, so do not ask me to point it actual implementation)
It is flexibility and exactly the reason I bought this unit. I guess I am not the only one.

@Matthias - may I kindly ask you to close this topic ? I did not intend to provoke a discussion of this kind, nor negative feelings or attitudes being shown around. My sincere apologies for stirring things up.

@Gorcio
Just wait till the next new ostc owner arrives and complaines about the safety stop, without reading the previous forum entries.

If the two custom functions were added, depth and time, with time at zero switching it off... and the factory default of it being off... Then all these posts/threads would stop. (apart from a few posts of thanks)

If the safety stop function was initially created at 3-6m for 3 mins, like most other standards/computers, these posts/threads would have PROBABLY not continued.

Computers are created to make something easy, enable us to do something we couldn't otherwise.

Safety stops have undoubtedly prevented many, many cases of DCI in 'naughy' and undeserved divers since they were introduced... They're a good thing.

It's sad to see what appears to be just tech diving snobbery... Recreational divers are people and divers too... (and most tech divers also do rec diving i bet)

I fail to understand why some people so object to this proposal. If you do not like it, do not turn it on.

Like many others here, I do both deep decompression dives but I also do medium depth boat dives and shallow shore dives. The safety stop feature is very handy, means I do not have to remember to start the stopwatch or remember what time it was when I reached the 5-6 m level. I personally would love it to turn on once I cleared deco as I always to a safety stop once I have cleared (for added safety of course).

We really consider this before someone gets hurt here...
I'll also add another CF for the upper depth threshold. I know this is going to be requested if we don't make this configurable, too.

No worries, it still is an experimental units, that can be left on default factory settings if a user does not know what to do with it.

Sounds good. Everything that gives users a freedom of choice sounds good :-)
