Help needed, cant manage to conect ostc 2n to pc

Hi you all !!!

I have recently purchased my new dive computer, and am enjoying it till now.
I am trying to conect the Ostc to my w7 pc, but the driver is giving me some trouble, and will not recognice the device...

I have tried the exe driver instaler, and the manual ones, but keeps telling me "unreconized device"....

I know the Ostc is fine, since a frind managed to connect it to his laptop, and install the 2.5 firmware...

Just cant manage to make it happend n my own laptop

Positive imput will be much appreciated.

yes, i did check the link, but unfortunately it has not solved the problem, that`s why i decided to post the new threat...

Windows 7 give's me an error meassage when I connect the 2n to the pc... the battery is reloading fine, but I can not connect it... error 43 or 10 on the port.. no idea how to solve it, yet!

None of the available software will connect, so i think is quite obvious the problem is not the software but the driver, al least is what i think.

Possible solutions will be much appreciated.

Windows selects usbfilter.sys as the controler, and keep telling "unrecognized device"...

Alright, try the following:
Plug In your OSTC at the computer
then
Open "Computer Management" and choose "Device Manager"
then look for
"USB Serial Converter"
right click on it and choose "Update Driver Software"
this will update the driver and install it correctly.

See the picture:

If you don't see USB Serial Converter then your usb cable may not be plugged in correctly (we have that quite often, it connects enough to charge but not sufficiently to make a data connection).

It tells me that it already has the latest drivers, but will still not recognize the device...

It`s frustating...

On a friends pc on the 2nd or 3rd try everything worked fine, and we updated to 2.5 versión, but on my laptop can not manage it... My system relays on W7 with service pack 1.

I have sharpenned another cable`s connector, from a blackberry device, wich uses the same cable, but had the same output.

Any more ideas?

Can you be a bit more explicit about the error message.
What are you trying to do when you get that message? Is it when you just plug the OSTC in it in at the USB port?

If yes have you got any other USB devices plugged in?
Are you plugging it in via a USB port replicator?

Have you tried another USB port on your PC?

OK, sorry for the luck of provided info...

The laptop has 3 different usb ports, none of witch are in use when I try connecting my ostc 2n device. The system is feshly started, so no other software is running at the background. I therefore do not use a usb multiplier or anything alike...

When the error meassage apears, I either double click on the meassage, in order to see the automaticaly selected driver by w7, and try to update it, or go to the device mannager to try to do the same, as you have suggested in the previus message.

The laptop is a simple aspire one, 3 months old, with original w7, and has given me no trouble till now. Other devices such as different photo cameras, phones, ipods, etc. get connected periodically with no problems.

I have tried all 3 differente usb ports available, with identical outcome.

I have tried 3 different cabels, apart fro the one provided with the 2N; one of wich i have sharpened at the 2N end to ensure it get right to the end, this hasn`t work either.

Ok then,

Go to this website:
FTDI Virtual Comport Driver

Download the VCP driver ZIP package for your operating system (Win7 64 or 32bit?).
Extract the ZIP file to the desktop.

Go back to the Device Manager and right click on the USB device and choose "Update Driver".
choose "Browse my computer for driver software"
navigate to the extracted zip file. It'll find the relevant driver, which then should be installed...

Thats how I fixed the same problem for a colleague here in Switzerland.

This is something I already tried, but i have done it again.
Windows doesn´t update the drivers an tell that it already has the latest driver...

It might be easier to transfer the logbook to a different pc (at least try to ), and transfer the divelog to my computer... I´ve runned out of ideas...

Something that I tried when I was facing similar problems was to remove / delete the existing driver and then follow Hansjoerg's (Swissdiving) instruction / suggestion and install the driver from scratch.

As Vassilis says. That would have been my next suggestion.

One other thing, have you tried plugging in the the OSTC on a different USB port on the PC/Notebook?

And don't forget to check for drivers who come with old Software! I had once a "Ericsson Mobile Suite" for my earlier mobile phone, this software also used a USB-Com-Port driver which confused other USB-Devices. Sometimes it can be a Scanner driver too...

Still trying to connect the device...

I have seen a different link (in german) with a user facing the same type of problems, I keep trying different solutions....

I have installed in an older acer laptop with xp the drivers, and doesn´t work either... keep allowing me to charge the batery but would not connect!!!

3 different cables tested, one of wich has being cleared, eliminating all the plastic with a cutter... tested in both W7 and xp with same result ¿?

The funny thing is that it connected once on a friend´s laptop to upload firmeware to 2.5.... will have to try again this friday on the same laptop, since i don´t understand a thing any more....

Maybe http://www.ftdichip.com/Support/Utiliti ... eadme.html is worth a try. I can only repeat, we need this COM port working in order to install latest firmware, setup date/time and recharge the battery right before shipping.
While not impossible, it's extremely unlikely that a new unit is shipped with a non-working USB port.

My OSTC has all of a sudden stopped being able to be downloaded. It was working last Thursday but over the weekend I tried literally hundreds of times to connect. This was using three different laptops where it has previously worked. It will charge, but no connection using the various software. I have also tried a different cable without success.

Any suggestions.

take a look at the connector to make sure there is no water damage.

if that is not the case then try downloading the driver linked in hw site and upgrade it.

Windows update does strange things some times.

otherwise I can try with my Linux laptop and see if it works there

Okay, interesting. I attached to my wife's laptop, installed and can get OSTC Tools to run and upload and download. So it is not the cable or the OSTC. However, I cannot get JDivelog to work. Very strange. Will work more on this.

- JRE (Java Runtime Engine)?
- JDiveLog?
- FTD-driver (comport)

it's java.... try installing sub surface. it's programmed in C so you are not depending on this week's patch of java.

did you install RX/TX driver when you installed Jdivelog ?

Well, now have it working again on my laptop. Totally uninstalled everything to do with OSTC and the driver and started again. Now to attack the laptop under the house and the netbook. Thanks for all your help.

Yes, could be the Java updates, sick of how often they occur.

EUREKA!!!
Everything works, finaly!!!
Something was wrong with the driver, so I used Matthias suggested driveer uninstaller tool, clered everithing related to the usb-com converter driver and started a clear install. I selected the D2XX drivers (http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/CDM/CDM20824_Setup.exe), and inmediately a com 5 port apperad as soon as the 2n was linekd.

Very strange with me, as the laptop under the house now works also, even though I did not touch. It now uses COM4 as I set on my normal laptop but I did not change this. Weird!
