hwOS Tech: 2.93beta released

Post by heinrichsweikamp »

Hi all,

Attached to this post is the 2.93beta in English and German. Sorry, no Italian or French this time. This beta has known issues in the PSCR mode so take care when using this. It's more a preview of the upcoming new features like gas consumption or the bigger font layout in dive mode. Some screenshots and details can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/heinrichsweika ... 9931276905 or here: https://www.facebook.com/heinrichsweika ... 3614749870

What we got:
- 2nd deco plan (e.g. Bailout plan for CCR dives) in real-time
- additional settings for CCR divers like a 4th ppO2 warning threshold
- isobaric counter diffusion warning
- noFly time adjustable (1000m, 2000m, 3000m, Flying)
- Microbubble warning
- gas consumption prediction for all gases. See how much deco gas you'll need or how much bailout gas you'll need. All including the entire deco plan and all active gases!
- a fix in the battery management for OSTC Plus computers

Hallo,

Hi all,

there is still one bug in the bailout gas consumption prediction: While already in the deco and above the first deco gas change, the algorithm still begins the deco schedule with the first gas instead of starting with the gas being appropiate for the current depth. So while the prediction you get "deep down" is ok, the one in the middle of the deco overestimates your needs. A fix will come soon...

Is there any chance you could add 8.5L as a size for tanks? It's an odd size yes, but when you have double 8.5L, that extra 1L between them can make a bit of a difference.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Independent double 8,5l (Sum would be 17l)?

That can work. However when you dive them independent (and maybe it's just me using it this way), I set up the two tanks as independent gases on the computer and switch between the gases when I switch regulators. This lets me automatically see on Subsurface when I've switched tanks.

By having the two tanks set independently you can see what the requirement is on each tank as they won't necessarily be at the same pressure through the dive.

Minor issue, mainly for independent tanks... as you can still work it out mentally by averaging out the pressure between the two tanks. But it would be one thing less to think about.

Hallo Ralph,

Did you configure the deco mix with a switch depth.
Only deco mixes with a switch depth are calculated for TTS.

Very rich update Matthias ! It's already Christmas ...
We hope soon the French version ...
Translation proposal for v_2.93 and some for the previous version :

- Surface mode display > "Last dive" = "Dern.Plgée"
- Main Menu > Simulator > Start Simulator > "Layout" = "Affichage" ou = "Affich."
- Main Menu > Simulator > Start Calculator > "Gas Usage" = "Besoin Gaz" ou = "Conso Gaz"
- Main Menu > Settings > Information > "Uptime:" = "Mise à jour:"
- Main Menu > Settings > "Waiting Time:Flying" = "Temps No Fly: Oui" ou "Temps No Fly:Fly Ok"
- Main Menu > Deco Setup > "Calc. 2nd Plan" = "Plan de Secours" ou = "Plan Secours"
- Main Menu > Deco Setup > Calc. 2nd Plan > "fTTS/Delay:" = "fTTS/Retard:" ou "fTTS/Délai"
- Main Menu > Deco Setup > Calc. 2nd Plan > "Tank sizes:" = "Vol. Bloc:"
- Main Menu > Deco Setup > Calc. 2nd Plan > "Tank Fill Press:" = "Pression Bloc:"
- Main Menu > settings > Display Settings > More ... > "IBCD Warning" : = "IBCD Alerte:"
- Main Menu > settings > Display Settings > More ... > "Dive Time out :" = "Sortie Tps Plgée:" ou = "Sortie Plgée:"
ou = "Fin Tps Plongée:" ou = "Fin plongée:"

Also, it would be nice to have a letter in front of the gas when they are active as it is to the asterisk before the first gas, it could be:
T: Travel Gas
B: Bottom Gas
D: Deco Gas
-: Disabled Gas
This will allow a sure control of the gas programming,

Best Regards
Cheers ;)

Hello Sharpw, Hallo Detlef, Hi Sailor, Hello Claude, Hallo Duese,

thanks for all the comments and proposals you wrote, i'll try to answer to all of them. Please allow me to write this post in english to spread the info to the whole OSTC community. If there will be some detail you like me to explain in german language please feel free to post again.

Regarding tank sizes - 8.5 liters would be really hard to handle because as the OSTC is just a (small) computer, we use numbers, in detail integer numbers, to store the tank size. So we can not natively handle a .5 intermediate size without complicating the code by a large extend. Maybe it'll be ok for you and the other users of 8.5 l tanks to use the 8 liter Setting and bear in mind you actually have a little bit of extra gas with you. As the available gas volume is calculated by tank size x fill pressure, you can also tune the fill pressure to have the product of both match your 8.5 liters tank content. See also in the text below.

For all versions from 2.26 on, including the 2.9x, the saturation / desaturation factors need to be set to 100% if you are using the GF extention to Buhlmann AND do not want to put in extra conservity to compensate for cold water, personal dispositions (high body mass index), etc. This is a little bit of a dilemma, as in non-GF-mode 100% would be very much on the edge of the Buhlmann limits, so we do not want to default the factors to 100% as there are also divers out there that do not use GF and may not be aware of a change in the defaults and because of that may end up getting bent...

To Sailors remark: yes, i'm aware. Actually, the 2.plan implementation was written be me... It shows a shortfall that has been in the code for longer, but without affecting any major issue up to now. You can see this shortfall in action when you bail out manually to a gas that is not the ideal gas for the current depth: the current code will not indicate that there is a better gas until you reach the next gas change depth. This shortfall extends now into the 2.plan calculations. It's on my to-do-list to get fixed!

Thanks Claude for the translations, as soon as we will have the 2.9x version ready for shipping as a stable, we'll produce the French/Italian Version. We'll also think on the letters you proposed then, too.

Hallo Düse, as stated in the first answer, the OSTC uses an integer number for storing the tank sizes among all the other configurable options. All of the current code infrastructure for the handling the options is based on 8 bit integers, thus the usable range is 0 - 255. For the tank sizes it is limited to 240 [bar] at the moment due to the way the internal generic integer-increase/decrease functions work at times. It's a known issue / point for future improvements. For the same reasons there is no direct input/output of barliters, as it would require 16 bit integers for which there's no generic code among the option's routines so far.
Yes it's ideal gas. If one would be going to real gas laws, thing will become quite difficult very soon and chances are that most OSTC users won't understand why the numbers displayed are always different. As an example, yesterday, after getting my 80 cft stage out of the warm car and putting it at the waterside in -2°C air temp, it "lost" some 40 bar on it's pressure gauge. How shall one figure such things into the OSTC display??
Regarding entry of tank pressures: ...and after refilling the pressures becomes higher again... The OSTC just has two buttons and i wanted to aviod sub-menus with +/-/exit selection... Let's get the 2.9x to the first stable release and then we'll see how to go on with the fancy stuff, ok?

Thanks again to all of you,
best regards,
Ralph

Thanks to the whole OSTC community for their questions, remarks and proposal !

Maybe I've lost something :S, but what does mean IBCD ?

And unlike Claude, I would suggest "Plong" instead of "Plgée" to translate "Dive" in french ;).

Why not Didier!

But the abbreviation rule is to keep the first and last letters, but not just the beginning of a word,

HW will make the right choice!

IBCD = isobaric counterdiffusion for Trimix,
Against diffusion of nitrogen with respect to helium!

Cheers ;)

Well guessed! ;-)

This new feature raises a warning in case the following conditions are all true:

1) You are in decompression, i.e. your tissue pressure is greater than the ambient pressure.

2) Due to a sub-optimal gas change, you have nitrogen going into your tissues while helium is leaving them - or the other way around. Hence "Counter Diffusion".

3) The net balance of the in and out is such that the tissue is actually increasing pressure - while you are in deco and at constant depth -> "isobaric"!

4) This happens in the leading tissue.

The warning will be given along with displaying the current Gradient Factor, which will rise during above conditions. The IBCD may come to a natural stop before the GF crosses the 100% border, but it may not do so. So it will be your turn to look at the GF, judge how far you are from the 100% and at which pace you are comming closer, and finally decide what to do...

Anyhow, welcome to the wonders of gas physics in trimix diving! :-)

Cheers,
Ralph

This explains the interest in practice for avoid IBCD,

To make the best possible choice for deco gas when programming and more specially for diving with trimix hypoxic for not to spend during the deco , from trimix hypoxic slightly weakly charged with nitrogen to a nitrox with high charge nitrogen

Where it may be necessary to use an intermediate triox to avoid or minimize IBCD,

Cheers ;)

Hi Michael,

there are many new settings in the 2.9x firmware, therefor the settings got a new internal version number. Subsurface isn't yet aware of this new settings version, so it throws the error. When changing settings version, all settings are reset to defaults to avoid incompatibility problems. The 2.9x for example allows the sat- & desat-factors to be adjusted in steps of 5% - the 2.2x can't deal with that.

many greetings to "down under",

Hi Ralph,

Many thanks for the explanation. It makes sense - my suggestion was a "nice to have" feature so it's definitely not the end of the world if it's not there. As you suggested, there are ways around it.

It sounds like you have all been pretty busy!

Hi Claude,

just to add on the new IBCD feature, there will now also be a warning thrown in the deco calculator (part of the simulator functions), so there is now a quick and handy way to check a dive plan for IBCD encounters.
