Red dots and message

Post by syrou »

Hi all,

I did just receive my OSTC Mk.2 new computer and I have a couple of questions that I hope someone may be able to answer me:

* On surface mode, at the lower left corner, I see two red dots on a single line. What are those? What do they mean? When I first powered it on the lowest line had the battery icon and not those dots, but after resetting the logs they appeared.

* Periodically when the computer is on surface mode the screen says someting about calculating an MD2 hash. What does that mean?

Thanks in advance!

This is the default "custom text". You can disable the display of the text or enter up to 23Chars with your name or telephone number, for example.

MD2 is a fingerprint of the installed firmware. It's calculated once/update or reset. You should not see this periodically without resetting or rebooting the unit.

Thanks for the clarifications.

Regarding the MD2 has, I have checked on "Firmware checker" button on Diving Log proggie, and it says "This firmware is not installed on your OSTC" regarding firmware version 1.60 and the ID you have on the web page. The thing is, maybe the ID changes if you change the settings or you have diving logs stored.

It's strange, since I received the unit with a 1.60 version already flashed on it. Do you recommend me to reflash it or is it explained because the settings make the MD2 hash value change?

How do you add this custom text on the OSTC Mk2?

Settings are logbook entries do not change the ID, only a reset or reboot (e.g. after a firmware update) will.

The custom text (and most of the OSTC configuration) can be entered from the PC, e.g. in Divinglog (First page of download screen).

Maybe it would better that the MD2 signature remains constant throughout the life cycle of a particular software version (regardless reboots). That way it could be possible to know if a computer has been tampered with before using it (just for the paranoid people like me ;)
