Forgotten USB cap
Forgotten USB cap
Hi,
On my last dive I forgott the USB cap. The Computer seems to be working but i have not tried the USB port.
Should i open it, and see if there are some moisture inside? Or should i hope for the best.
Best regards,
CG

Re: Forgotten USB cap
Hi,
Seawater? If yes, rinse immediately with fresh water and apply some WD40 or similar. Make sure it's completely dry before closing the cap.
Do not attach USB cable if there still is moisture, the contacts will corrode if current is applied.

Matthias

Re: Forgotten USB cap
Do not open the dive computer. Its filled with a gel that seals the inside. You may damage that.
Follow Matthias' instructions in this post
Here the excerpt from the 2N manual:
The Li-Ion rechargeable battery is sealed
in gel for safety reasons. Do not open
the diving computer. If the OSTC 2N is
opened the bottom plate has to be replaced
and the battery has to be sealed
anew.

It's a custom made part, of course. Order a replacement from us

Re: Forgotten USB cap
Luckily it was freshwater. I´m going to leave it on the radiator for a few days before I dare to connect it. I will come back how it went.

Re: Forgotten USB cap
No no no,
Not radiator. Thats (very) bad for the batterie. If anything you can blow it out with low pressure air and then apply some WD40, but gently does it!

Swissdiving: Okey i will not do that.
Are the computer sealed behind the USB port as well?
I can also tell you that the N2 workt like a charm all the way down to 40m and up, and I did not realize that i forgott i before it was time to take the equipment off.

*gosh* I wanted to start a new business with OSTC spare parts. My favorite will be a cap where the screwdriver from my swiss army knife fits perfectly in and does not harm the material with scratches and so...
All above is (c) by me

Re: Forgotten USB cap
Do you know the USB cable end matches the Cap perfectly and is the perfect opening tool ?

Maybe.. but I doubt it. The cap only has to be finger tight..

Re: Forgotten USB cap
The usb cable wrench solution is a genious idea! You will not overtighten the cap, because you are afraid to break the cable. You do not need to open the cap unless you have a usb cable present... And with a minimum runtime of 40Hrs and a lot of logbook entries available, you do not have to be ancious to wear out the o-ring and threading in the cap/instrument. Perfect, do not change it HW!
Re: Forgotten USB cap
So I read this post yesterday and now - I forgot this cap at my dive today...
Dear HW team - just let the computer dry and that's it or could some part be damaged? btw. freshwater.
thx - Lukas

Re: Forgotten USB cap
Lukas, that's not a big problem: Immediately dry the contacts for the usb-cable afterwards and apply a little bit of an oily contact-spray (WD40 for example) to prevent corrosion.

Hi,
Remove water, let it dry and:
Do not attach USB cable if there still is moisture, the contacts will corrode if current is applied.
regards,
Matthias

Re: Forgotten USB cap
Hello,
I let the computer stay for two weeks to dry. I have now used it on 10 dives after this without any problems.

Re: Forgotten USB cap
I dont think the USB cable will last for too long if abused that way.
Personnaly, I use a one Euro cent coin. Not a perfect fit, but OK. It's just finger tight.
But the issue with the forgotton cap is one of the things I dont like about the OSTC. This to me is a perfect example for Murphy's law. It's not a question if, it's just a question of when it'll happen to you! Hopefully, it will be on a fresh water dive.
Is there any chance to imporve? Well yes, but not an easy one. How about fitting a bluetooth device into the unit? This of course is something for the next generation. And Matthias, you dont need to pay me money for this great idea. Just gimme one of the new units for free.

Re: Forgotten USB cap
Bluetooth is IMHO only of added value when used in conjunction with wireless charging as well.
As far as great ideas go, I guess that wireless charging and bluetooth would be something to look at for future models, not excluding any current model line.
But for now.... How often do you really have to charge or read data? Currently I log about 6-8 hours of diving per week, so worst case that would give me 4 weeks before I need to charge my OSTC again.
Is it really that hard to remember to put the screw cover back on?
PS: Mathias, I'm expecting a free unit when you incorporate wireless charging in a future model.

Re: Forgotten USB cap
Hi,
A lost USB cap is a quite rare support request.
One trick is to buy a spare cap: If you have a spare for immediate replacement you won't need it

Matthias
