Hi,

i believe HW should not compete with other manufacturers on the recreational market.
If they do they will be bought out very quickly by suunto or any other brand to eliminate the competition.
Is this what the present users want ???
I doubt!
There's plenty choices for recreational divers and not so many for technical divers.
I'ld rather like to see this small firm still manufacturing specialized computers for technical divers in a couple of years and not beeing a brand name for the Suunto HEO2.
I think Shearwater or Delta P are still in the market and independend manufacturers because they didn't start competing with manufacturers of recreational computers.

Just my two cents, Reiner

I think as long as the OSTC is open source there would be some chance to keep it runnig even if one of the big players overtake it. Thinking about dmainous statement I could see some valid points in there.

Getting On Topic: What about the salinity setting we talked about sooo much? Is this included in the transfered log data? At least it seemes to be stored and shown in the internal log book already but I've not seen it in jdivelog afterwards.

Also the used deco model would be nice to be stored and transfered...

Well I'd like to keep the OSTC technical as well but I am not the programmer or manufacturer of the TC. Therefore, I don't control what gets added or not. The only thing I can do, which I am very grateful for, is to contribute by suggesting features. The programmer seems to be inclined to add a recreational feature. I can only presume that over time there will be others.

So, if you can't beat them you may as well join them in a way you'll enjoy it.

Therefore why I'm suggesting that if they choose to add features to appeal to a wider, less educated market that it gets done in a way that isolates that population from the original target market (i.e. us).
In my suggestion the new target market also is protected from their potential lack of knowledge by being prevented from manipulating most advanced features.

Guys, this model is not new. It gets implemented all across the IT software. Firewall, media studios, ripping software, etc. They all have the 4 radius solution and the advanced mode where you can heavily customise.

A potential sell of HW to a competitor is not something that should take your breath. Some people are happy to be independents and some are open to the idea of selling. Either seed is already in the minds of HW and having a more capable product will not change that outcome.

ps. I don't believe I know much about decompression or programming. Only that I have spent some time reading some of the research papers and thus understand a bit more. Having said that, last time I saw Simon Mitchell he started by saying that he knew very little about decompression. So put this in perspective. ;)

Hi,

When talking with recreational divers or beginners I doubt they will spend 735EUR (German resale price) for a computer. The OSTC is intend for experienced and technical divers but we're try to make it as easy to use as possible. The recreational market is where you can sell quantities. With some additional years of experience, why not?
On the "boot" dive show (The place we talk with hundreds of (potential) customers) we met two different user groups: a) Divers wanting a computer that can be read easily and is easy to operate and b) divers who want an affordable Trimix computer. Group c) (Wanting a cheap alternative for a standard computer) was kindly requested to proceed to our competitors.

Cheers,
Matthias

Hi Matthias,

I think you are right with the newly qualified divers. I belong to the Diving Organisation of the University of technology (Douts) and yes money is short and most of the time students don't have a dime.

On the other hand I have my other club. St George Scuba Club, which has over 300 members. Most of them are recreational but very keen. Some of them dive 5-7 times a week and have been doing this for 35 years. Which brings me to their problem. Most of them are having age related sight problems and are having a hard time reading the old style screens. (Although I'm only 35, I'm one of those that needs help reading the old screens)

Most of them have little interest in the type of dives I commonly do however all of them love my screen. Recreational, ageing population, newly retired and loaded, baby boomers is the target my friend.

To quote one of them... "I am not very technically inclined and rarely go beyond 30m however I bought this She@rw@ter because it has a simple screen, its simple to use and I can read the numbers".

Therefore,I still think that a simple recreational setup should promote a lot of sales.

I mean I would buy one for my MRS if she ever decides to go back into diving.

Best regards
