New competitor...

Hi all

I don't want to do a lot of advertisement here, but i got a newsletter from Divesoft, where they announce a new technical diving computer (release in March 2013). The feature list of the "Freedom" is quite long. I just want to point out some things that might be interesting as features on OSTC too:
  • 4 switchable screens during the dive including graphical dive profile
  • 3 descent and 3 ascent rate editable zones
  • decompression games
And last but not least shows the display in every mode the battery status...

Because it is just an announcement yet i do not have any price informations.

Of course! I believe that the feature list of our OSTC is even longer - but still there are ideas out there which might find the way to our computer... B)-

Hi all,
while I share the boredom of decompression I feel that playing games on your decompression computer is not the way to go:
- loosing situational awareness
- not concentrating on you body signals
- loose the chance of reviewing dive (especially if you did a deep air one with elevated level of narcosis) you would loose most of the dive itself

My feel is that while doing DANGEROUS activities (tell me that Tek scuba is not!) the equipment should be as easy as possible to read and use. Add superfluous functions and you insert chance of errors. Also adding complication of complexity in the display and screens would increase the chance of an operator misreading a necessary data or wasting time to scroll into the proper screen to find the required information.

Finally, while I did order my OSTC based on many good documents and videos, I still have no idea how it displays ascent speed ..... being able to define green yellow red range for ascent speed would be good and it would require only 2 CF ..... and a speed bar display.

Just my 2 cents

Merry Christmas

Yo Goose,

Actually, in the following forum entry Rob has created and made available a document with a comprehensive listing of the CFs.
Custom Function Documentation

You will find that "CF47:Velocity warning" allows you to set the alarm at which ascent speed the warning occurs. Default is 15m/min

In "CF60: Graphic velocity" you can set whether the ascent speed is shown in numbers or graphically.
Oh and there is only one warning colour, so you are either below the by you defined max. ascent speed or you are faster.

That should actually be quite obvious if you did some diving with the OSTC.
RTFM

ADDENDUM: Some games would be neat.

Having direct competition can be good for the development of new features and methods of display and operation.

It is quite important to keep things simple for this dangerous hobby of ours though yeah. But the competition will no doubt speed the development of better, simpler, smarter ways of doing stuff too... Us users will keep that in check.

Perhaps out OSTC will gain lots and lots of extra functionality, that many of us won't make use of, or just don't want on there ;-) But then all we need is good settings menus to disable this stuff that we don't want, leaving just the functionality we need for the style or environment we're diving. Which will probably be different for almost all of us.

These computer things can do almost anything we need! And can make our lives a lot easier... and safer too...

Hansjoerg,

thanks for your comments ... I finally put my hands on my new OSTC and I have been playing with it for the past 2/3 hours.
I see what you meant with the ascent speed.

I am redinf the manuals but thos are a but thin .... better playing with the real thing.

I wish I had it a couple of days earlier since I was in Sardinia diving on Thursday (wet suit 18 C air temp 14 C Water temp Sea and wind calm >:D< )

Merry Christmas (I will try in water next year, very soon and I am excited about it).

Cheers

Fabio

Yo Goose,
Yes you are right the manual for the OSTC/2N is a bit on the thin side. Especially when it comes to connecting the OSTC to the PC with all the driver issues and the various software available.

You will find that the forum as well as the HW website contains almost all information necessary. The best way is to use the Search function in the forum.
If you really get stuck the forum members will be more than happy to help.

As for the OSTC itself, I recommend that you dive the 2N first in standard configuration before you start changing the CF's, its the best way to get to know it.

A very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too.

ADDENDUM: Hold the thought on the Search Function in the forum...
...for me it doesn't really work, but maybe I am just thick.
:S
