Graphical Compass

Post by heinrichsweikamp »

Hi,

OSTC3 user Janos (User "jak" here in the forum) made a nice graphical compass display for the OSTC3, cR and Sport.

Here's a preview of the current work:

Brilliant! The more analogue displays, the easier it is for me to understand underwater when narced.

Good work !

Can we add a functionnality to add a setpoint in order to keep a direction ?

Arrows with indication of the setpoint could also be nice ( or 180°) like the uwatec galileo

Thanks!

Reference bearing (setpoint) with reciprocal (-180°) course is coming together with direction helper arrows.
If time and other constraints allow other helpers like square and triangular course markers (like the mentioned galileo) will be added later.

Great work, thanks Janos
Look forward to seeing this in a firmware update in the future.

Great job...

What is the update frequency? It seems to lag a bit.

realy realy great job! congratulation!!!

it would be nice to able to set the bearing already in surface mode (via menu somehowe - you could show the green and red bearingmarkers in surface mode as green an red numbers while the compass shows the bearing direction)

thanks für that graphical compass - great!

I think a graphical compass should mimic what you would get if you looked at the face of an ordinary compass (i.e. a clock face or part clock face at least). Mimicking what you see through the side port of a compass is not how I use a compass, and that information is already well represented with the existing numerical value.

The current graphical compass implementation is similar to that seen on Suuntos. I prefer a part circle like that seen on the XDeep Black as it mimics a normal compass. I think a part circle adds real additional information for navigation (spatial awareness), whereas a scrolling wheel is pretty but does not do this. Furthermore, a clock face view does away with the problem of needing an offset in the compass to compensate for arm orientation whereas a scroll wheel does not.

Is it possible to implement a clock face compass? Perhaps on a second screen?

the way it is implementet now fits perfectly to the rest of the elements on this computer. if you would implement a clockface - then important informations that we can see now at places were they usually are (depht, time etc.) would not be there anymore and i alwys have to push a button to see the compass. and thirdly - to implement someting like this it would men a lot of work. better get used to this representation - it works just fine under wather and is stratght forward.

Hi,

~6 times/second. And without major changes in the firmware this can not be increased easily. But we're working on some better filtering in order to make the display a bit smoother.

Can we at least have an option of reverting to the previous representation (numbers only)? Pretty as it is, this current implementation adds unwelcome complexity mid dive for me. I have never heard a Suunto diver brag about the utility/aesthetics of their electronic compass and I rather suspect this is because it is more useful on paper than in mid dive (which is my experience with Suunto electronic compasses).

Re: Graphical Compass - Better access

Post by ClaudeDive »

Hi Matthias,

To a quick select for function "compass" in dive mode, in simulator mode but also in surface mode when the compass is displayed, is it possible to have with short pressing (like currently) on the left button "compass" in first choice or if isn't possible in second choice after "menu" or better included in the menu, in order to mark "compass" for any the screens and so be able to return quickly to compass from any pages,

+1 to having the "Set Bearing" as the first option when pressing the left button.
It would also be great if it waspossible to set the bearing from surface mode :-)

I just bought the OSTC Sport and love the compass feature and this graphical display.

I'm wondering if it's possible to include the compass bearing in downloadable logs? If someone can point me in the code to how this could possible work I'm happy to do the edits and testing...

I know that there is a lot of data processing to do once downloaded as the compass bearing will vary wildly over time, but it's interesting data to potentially be able to relate to depth, etc.
