Charging OSTC 4

Post by nicosol »

Hello
I'm having problems to load my OSTC 4. How I can not properly place to charge . If you move a millimeter , it no longer works ...
Always have the screen on to see if the charging continues .

Very disappointed recharge system

Hi,

We also have a video on how to place the charger: https://www.facebook.com/heinrichsweika ... 090153825/ You can see on the charger LED if the unit recharges properly. No need to keep the screen running. Make sure to have a USB power supply with at least 1A of output current in order to power the charger.

Hi.

Wi didn't test so many chargers. If you want to try a non heinrichs/weikamp QI charger you have to remove the backplate to get in close contact to the receiver circuit.

kind regards,

Hello,
i have exactly the same problem.
I have to place it absolut exactly (1mm of move and it doesnt charge)
If not exactly in place the LED flashes quickly green.
I tried different chargers (1A, 2A, an PC with USB 2.0 and USB3.0)
If i remove the backplate it charges ok.
Is there a solution or what charger i have to use?

kind regards

Hi Ansgar,

If it's one of the older OSTC4 (smaller serial 180 or so) then you still have the Qi 1.1 standard. With this, the positioning is a bit tricky. but we'll modify your unit free of charge into the new 1.2 standard (10mm transfer range compared to 4mm) and replace your charger with one of the new models. Please contact us then: info@heinrichsweikamp.com

For both versions, a USB power supply with 2A is recommended and 1A is minimum.

For choosing alternative charger(Qi Standards with certificate by WPC) for both Phone / OSTC.

Hi all,

A solution for the position's charger. I made a pad with a 3D Printer.

Claude,

Do you sell this? I am very interested. Even with the fix HW installed it still takes to much time to find the right position.

Claude

is there any chance that you could share the STL file so that interested people could send it to printing service (or order from you if run such service) ? It looks like it is symetric ... but symetric does not really work for me ... and according to the manual - it is not centrally located ...

Hi all,

Your are right Gorgio it's not symetric as you can see in the picture. The design I made works fine with my computer.

Here is the STL file. I do not take any garantee about the result.

Merci beaucoup Claude. First will send my unit in for charging hardware replacement, then ... will see if charging pad is needed :-)

Hi Claude,

Thanks so much for your charging pad stand 3D design. It works perfectly on my unit!

@heinrichsweikamp

Can you please post an engineering drawing showing the precise location of the charging coil inside the OSTC4 so that I can make a fixture to hold it in the correct location rather than trial and error.

Given that the charging process is so difficult, I'd suggest that you provide a plastic template to hold it in position. I'd be happy to share a design once I have found a simple solution that works reliably.

I tried the design that Claude kindly posted, but it does not work well for me. I think something that clips in place securely is what is needed so that it can be left unattended and continues to work even if moved e.g. onboard a boat.

Thanks

Newer versions of OSTC4 have a notch in the bottom plate to keep the charger just in place

Thanks.

I received my new OSTC4 only 3 weeks ago and there isn't a notch. Can you please send me photo of the plate.

@heinrichsweikamp - Are these plates available to be sent out if they locate charger correctly?

My second OSTC4 has the plate with the notch.

That plate brings a greater plastic thickness that makes my charger does not work properly (blinking).

I have to remove the plate (2 screws) for a correct recharge.

Can we find a more powerfull coil ?

It is tempting to make a recess for the charger in the right position that will have two benefits.
1) locate the charger correctly
2) bring the charger coil closer to the device coil

Probably only needs to be 1.5mm deep. But I don't want to alter my unit and risk warranty issues, nor risk of damage in use (though that area of computer is against arm - wetsuit or drysuit.

Hi, I will send photos as soon as my unit returns from service. But both my units #439 and #152 had that notch. I had not any problems witch charging.

My unit has a recess , and has a charging problem. Tried with 3 different chargers.
Previous unit (RIP) did not have a recess and never had any issue charging.

Hi,

We always recharge every computer (OSTC4 or not) through this inductive charger (We have a board of 40 Qi chargers for this). So, it should work on your units just fine. Yes, requirement on the USB power supply is demanding (We recommend a 5V/2A power supply). With the first ~180 units (Which had the older Qi standard which we modify to the new version free of charge) all OSTC4 use the newer Qi 1.2 standard (Green PCB in the charger) it should recharge just fine.

Hi all,

My solution for an efficient charge.
You cut the back plate around the place for the coil.

With this hole, no problem.

You can also adjust the hole and the coil will stay in the right place even if it's no stable...

Hello Claude,

Don't butcher the OSTC4 with your Dremel ;)

The unit would not have left the production here if we couldn't recharge it as it was built. We always recharge the units before shipping with the same charger we include in the shipping then...

I'm quite sure with a proper power supply (2A/5V) the unit recharges just fine even with a complete backplate.
