OSTC 2C USB socket corroded
Hi OSTC Forum
The USB socket of my OSTC 2C is corroded. i cannot charge the dive computer anymore. I have no idea how that happened, as I've done at least 250 dives with it. Probably salty winds while charging?
My question is: how can I un-corroded that socket? The 4 single connector lanes within the sockets are so small, I cannot scratch off the rust.
any ideas?
Happy Season's Greetings!

Try WD40 for a start. Do not try to remove any rust mechanically since the bulkhead a bit fragile...

Re: OSTC 2C USB socket corroded
Hi Matthias
thank you for your reply. But is this a honest answer? Don't get me wrong, there are phastillions of forum threads suggestion to use WD40 for any problem (my dog barks too loud - use WD40...). I just don't want to destroy my OSTC completely.
For cell phone usb contacts sometimes "isopropyl alcohol" and "switch cleaner/starting spray" is suggested.
But I'm a little bit concerned about a short circuit using these methods.
thank you

The advice is being given by the manufacturer. Trust them!

Ha, I overlooked the user name 'heinrichsweikamp' in Matthias' post. Thx Ed for the hint.
I'll give WD40 a shot and will post the result later on.
thank you both!

WD40 is fine. You have to clean everything afterwards, of course. We use here a special cleaner for repairs of this kind: Talamex WP100 - but WD40 and some 2-Propanol to rinse it works fine, too.

Hello Matthias,
Is it a good thing to put WD 40 as a precaution on the USB port of my OSTC3 or is it better to do nothing if there is no problem,
Best Regards,

Re: OSTC 2C USB socket corroded
Hello Matthias,
I've tried the WD40 approach:
1. I sprayed some WD40 into the USB port and let it work for about 5min.
2. I used some tissue to dry the outer and inner port
3. let it dry for 30min
4. I used small bit of a plastic packaging (thin & stiff) to "rub" the inner USB por.
well - it didn't help! I repeated the steps again, but with no avail.
@Matthias: what did you mean with "clean"?
cheerioh&thx

Re: OSTC 2C USB socket corroded
Just to be sure: It's really not charging and you have tested the cable with any other device already? Still one of the most asked question we get via mail is this here: read.php?2,16518

Re: OSTC 2C USB socket corroded
hold on - now I'm confused!
Firmware V3.13
My CF74 is set to 1800.
On-Time: 413 Minutes
the battery indicator is blue and at about 80%
But:
"While charge is added to it, the battery indicator will not increase during charge" - but there was/is a red led on the back of the DC which flashes while charging. This led isn't flashing. The DC does not turn on, while pluggin nor while plug into the computer. the DC isn't recognized by the log book software.
I tested 3 cables which work fine with my cell phone. I also tested different chargers - all work with the cell phones. Did again charge cycles for about 9hrs - nothing.
I still believe the contacts in the USB ports are corroded.
Any ideas?

Hi,
When the battery indicator stays blue even with USB cable, yes: Not normal. Maybe it's better when we have a look at this unit at our place. Please email us: info@heinrichsweikamp.com

Matthias
