Screen freeze during dive

Post by Laurie_the_Knot »

I am running firmware version 2.97 on my OSTC2 #11454 and during my safety stop the screen froze with just over one minute to go. Fortunately I had a backup computer which I used to complete my dive.

Has anyone experienced this event before and if so what is the best course of action I can follow to restart the firmware.

I have tried moving a strong magnet around the unit without success with and without the unit being charged. As far as I can see my only course of action is to allow the battery to discharge below functional voltage where the CPU should be interrupted and reboot.

All suggestions welcome.

Hi Laurie,

things that should not happen... Will it be possible for you to post a picture of the screen? Regarding the magnet: this "trick" does work on a OSTC cR and maybe some older models, but not on the OSTC 2 models in the small housing. Letting the battery drain down and then doing a recharge will restart the computer. The battery will not be damaged by this procedure as there is dedicated hardware that will disconnect the battery from all other electronics when it is completely low. After recharging, please update to V2.98 stable or V2.99 beta 5 that can be found here. Both Versions are better than the 2.97 and although the 2.99 beta 5 is pending for a small fix it is good for use.

best regards,
Ralph

Thanks for the information Ralph, I guessed as much.

Once the unit fully discharges and shuts down I will install V2.98. I'm currently enjoying some diving in the Maldives so this is a little frustrating. I, fortunately, have a backup computer which I am now having to rely on.

Before this dive the unit was showing the battery at 65%. With the default Eco display setting any idea how long it might take to shut down?

Wow, Maldives - whished to be there now as well, instead of sitting in the wet and cold of northern Germany... ;-)

A full battery will yield some 30 to 40 hours on eco, soemtimes even a bit more. So after 2 days at latest you should be able to recover your OSTC. Thanks a lot for the screen image, it's a great help in narrowing down which portions of the code were in the execution path while the unit went into stall.

Cheers,

Hi Ralph,

Remember I had a similar problem with 2.99 beta (see https://forum.heinrichsweikamp.com/read.php?6,20078, October 2) ; it seemed to be compass related. Thanks to my OSTC Plus, I hadn't to wait the battery to be empty...

Best regards.
