jdivelog not downloading

Hi,
I'm running jdivelog on an ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx system, and have a mk2 1.70 ostc.
I turn on the ostc and connect the USB cable.
After starting jdivelog, I go to
file->settings divecomputer
and select the OSTC driver, the comm port, and the protocol (mk2 1.50-1.70).
Then I select
file->download from dive computer
The progress bar slowly fills, then I get an error box with the following message
Transfer of data failed (Comm-Timeout).
Any hints on how I can make this work better?
