Hi I try tp find a solution opening a new post I was writing in the 1.80 release announcement...

My Mk2 is not working anymore see pictures to understand.

I was trying to install 1.8 but could not get the loader to write to the mk2.

then I tried to change settings on the mk2 via Diving Log 5.0 to see iwf it could communicate. Change were passed to the mk2 but it stopped working.

Now it blinks between dove mode and surface mode 3 times and then goes off.

tried to reboot to reset and magnet reset nothing works and i am still on 1.7

Do I have to send it over for fixing the issue ?

Hi Bago,

It is quite likely that something failed during the upload and it is quite unlikely that you broke the computer whilst doing the upgrade so don't despair. :)

You mention that you tried to upgrade from Diving Log so I will presume you are on Windoze. (have you heard of linux? ;) )

1 Therefore let's start by deactivating your firewall and antivirus for this process as they can be interrupting the communication between the pc and ostc.

2 I presume you have installed the windows drivers for the OSTC. If you haven't then download them from here. (look all the way down)

http://www.heinrichsweikamp.com/en/ostc ... _software/

3 Download a copy of a firmware known to be working on your OSTC. It is important that if you download the correct one i.e. if you have an OSTC MK1 then download that version of the firmware. (if you havent saved a copy of 1.7 then download it from here:

MK2 1.7
http://users.tpg.com.au/mainou01/firmware/mk2_v1.70.zip
MD5SUM 3c680e814ed33bf08ba6f9db7416aac9

or just try with 1.80 again if you don't trust my file.

4 Once you have downloaded the OSTC MK2 1.8 firmware and before you un-zip the package check that the MD5SUM matches the one published on the website. If you are using my file use the md5sum number above as I had to re zip it for you. If it doesn't try again until it does. The MD5SUM confirms the integrity of the file.

If you do not know how to check the file integrity in windows then download a program from this site.

http://www.md5summer.org/

5 Now you can unzip the file.

6 The next step is to fully charge your battery. Always flash with a full battery.

7. With your pc ready to upload (you have already pressed the upload button) use the magnet to restart the OSTC. As soon as the OSTC is restarted it will start to communicate with the PC.

If you can't nail the timing right just try again.

You should be fine after that.

Let us know how you go.

I have done everything you described.

I have downloaded the right files, I have disabled firewalls, I have restarted the ostc with the magnet and pressed the write button, still i get from the loader :

Connected to \\.\COM1 at 115200
HEX: 10 days old, INHX32,18Fcode+cfg, total=87022 bytes.
Searching for PIC ...Not found,
ERROR!
The OSTC before I restarted with the magnet was falshing from dive to surface mode.
Now it is fix on UNEXPECTED RESET FROM DIVEMODE ...

I can't have the boot loader to find the pic ... the only way I know the MK2 is read from the pc is with diving log ( I have downladed the logbook to the pc ) and the only way I know my pc can write to the OSTC mk2 is with the Diving log configuration option.

As i said after i have added the customised phrase with the diving log the MK2 stopped working properly.

I attach some screenshots

I have just managed to enter again in the menu I have reset cf, gas & deco
The MK2 now turned all white color font and shows no error anymore.
I have done all resets and rebooted... it seems ok.

Still now I am on 1.7 I tryed again with the procedure to upgrade but i keep pn receiving bootloader errors...

Try performing the same procedure with as different pc.
Try doing it with Jdivelog and the bootloader.

Don't despair it is quite likely to be a communication issue between your computer and the ostc at the time of upload.

Try using a simpler computer such as an XP machine.

If thi fails, send an email to Christian and Matthias. I read somewhere that they went on a diving trip but normally they are quite good in answering back.

Best regards,

D

BTW, try connecting the OSTC to the windows machine.

Then go to "devices" find the OSTC and delete the driver. Don't own a windows machine so cant help you a lot with this.

then reinstall the usb driversd again and then plug the ostc.

Another option: you have the wrong port selected. Try another one.

On my laptop, I have to wakeup and connect the OSTC *BEFORE* launching the bootloader to allow it to automatically find the correct port (COM10).

Yes that sounds familiar too.

I also have problems of recognition, I installed the drivers, I downloaded the latest version upgrade 1.80 but nothing happens.

I wonder why can not an automatic update system firmware through the recognition of a product code.

Simply plug in your computer, connect to your site, open an update window and then choose whether or not to update it with a simple yes or no.

Take as an example the Garmin GPS for the more advanced. By logging on to the instrument is approved and subsequently updated (optional) without having to install drivers, sync your PC, etc. ... and multilingual.

Easy to use in water, but difficult to update. For me it is a limit.

It costs 700 € ....

sorry for my English

You are joking right?

Do you have a clue of how many gps's garmin sells every year?
Have you considered that this computer "speaks" to windows, mac and linux where your gps only does windows?
Have you considered that this computer cost you one third of any other comparable computer?
Have you considered that this computer does get upgrades?
That the developers listen to you and you can contact them any day. Try doing that with suunto, uwatec or your Garmin GPS.
Have you considered that this computer gets specifically advertised as "An experimental platform"?

honestly, sell it and buy something else.

Best regards

D

The boot loader let you choose only 4 ports.
The first time I have installed the drivers windows choosed com12 ... I have renamed the port name, now I can download my dives with diving log by selecting port com1.
If I use com1 in the bootloader it does not work.
I am pretty sure that I have done something wrong and this is why I have unisnstalled downloaded and reinstalled 4 times ...
I do wake up and connect mk2 before launching bootloader, still no changes in results...
Can you write me a step by step guide to check if mk2 driver is correctlyinstalled and working.
I am using a lenovo thinkpad T400
Windows XP Professional version 2002 service pack 3
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU M520 @ 2.40Ghz 3GB ram

dmainou ... your comments we know already .... probably my English creates misunderstandings.

Dedicated driver download, synchronize your PC with the MK2, download files for the upgrade is not an easy task for everyone, especially if you have only a PC with a single operating system.

The MK2 I bought it just because it is continually upgraded and we speak directly with the manufacturer, this means that there is a chance to observe some objective difficulties of updates.

I think updating a dive computer, directly from the link of the site, without requiring the customer to understand, even for computer science, is a good thing. And Garmin is just one example, other brands of computer up to date in this way. (Garmin also works with Mac;-))

It 's the same thing that request to include the reading of the average temperature (example), or any appropriate information for the dive.

A critique is an added value, positive.

Have different languages is a good thing ...

I chose the MK2 just because it has this capability.

Cordially

PACI;-)

Hi PACI,

It is very expensive to have a dedicated driver for immediate and easy download. Microsoft will charge tens of thousands of dollars for one licence for one pic chip. Each licence is only valid for one version of microsoft. Therefore if you have a licence for windows 7 64bit you will need to pay for a separate licence for windows 7 32bit and any other version of windows including 98, xp, me, 2000, vista 32, 64 and so on.

Large corporates such as HP are able to afford all those licences as they use one pic chip across all their printers and then sell millions of printers around the world.

Medium sized companies such as suunto buy the licences and then sell you a very expensive usb cable for 100's of dollars. Still, suunto sells millions of watches every year.

I think that the guys from HW have done an outstanding job to deliver such a good computer at that price. Especially if you consider that the computer communicates with every operating system you can think of. That may involve a small amount of work on your side of the equation.

The serial number of my OSTC implies that there are few of them around and therefore I don't expect to have "plug and play" connectivity. Having sad that, my OSTC needs no drivers at all to speak to my linux box.

Oddly, today, I was reading an old article in the paper called "dexterity is a dying art". It is written by Jay Leno. He was comparing the 1954 manual of his oldest Jaguar an the manual of his new 2010 Jaguar. The old one had a section on "removing the engine and gear box" and made some jokes about his new XJ where everything is call the dealer.

http://smh.drive.com.au/motor-news/manu ... 16knq.html

It is my opinion that the ostc is not like a new XJ it is an experimental platform and should be treated as such. There will be some outstanding features and there will be a couple where you will need to get your hands dirty. Installing the drier to upgrade is one of those great and slightly complicated things. However, compare it with a suunto dive computer. To the best of my knowledge no suunto dive computer is capable of ever being upgraded. Therefore there is no need to complain right?

Best regards,

D

Bago,

I don't have a windows machine, however, I am almost sure I have a document that describes a similar situation to yours.

Let me digg it and I'll post it soon.

Long story cut short you need to plug the ostc. Find it under devices and delete the current driver. Then unplug it and reinstall the original driver.

Then you are fresh and can proceed as normal.

On which time zone are you? maybe I can remote into your pc and help you.

Ok try this.

* plug in the ostc and wake her up (consider changing the cf so it stays on for the whole procedure)
* Go into device manager.
* look under "universal serial bus controller" or "Ports com and lpt" and find the ostc
* right click on properties
* click on uninstall and follow the prompts.

Disconnect the OSTC, shut down the pc.

Once you have turned the PC back ON and BEFORE you reconnect the OSTC install the driver from here:

http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm

This is the same process you followed the first time you installed the OSTC.

Once you have followed the prompts you should have a fresh configuration for the OSTC driver.

You can now connect the ostc and wake it up.

Go back to the device manager and check see which com port it's hooked to. (it is likely to be through a usb port then com XXX

With the OSTC awake and the pc having recognised it launch the boot loader and upgrade to 1.80

To upgrade follow this steps:

MAKE SURE YOUR BATTERY IS FULL

I have never used the boot loader (only Jdivelog) but it should be very similar.

* select the com port (the one you saw on device manager),
* select the HEX file that you extracted from the 1.80 zip package.
* with the computer awake click on "write flash" and almost immediately you reboot the ostc.

3 minutes later the upload should go through. Then reset all CF's, deco, etc wait a while until it reboots itself again (it always does it after a while).

Done.

I hope it helps.

step by step on instalation of the firmware and the bootloader part of the process.

use my instructions to get rid of the current driver and then follow the info on the link.

Good to hear mate.

Well this confirms that there is something wrong with you driver and that you need to completely delete it and start again.

Or use that other computer to upgrade from now on.
