Storage - Battery / Dive Log data

Hi There,
When not in use (and after a good clean water soak) I presume it is OK to store my OSTC 2n away, and let the battery discharge. Then charge again before the next dive ?
Any idea how long a fully battery will last whilst in storage ?
Does the OSTC 2n keep all the dive log data, even when the battery goes flat ?

How long do you need ?
18650 Li-on accumlators have a very small self discharge

Bardass,
I just wondered if the 2n was left in storage for 3/4 months and the battery ran flat, whether it would keep all the dive logs, and the battery would be OK being discharged.
I would presume it would be fine, and the dive logs etc are kept on some sort of internal 2n storage..but thought it is worth asking..

Dive logs and all custom function settings are stored in non-volatile memory. These data are kept even if the battery is removed.

Giz,
Thanks for the info.

I'm pretty sure the battery is not empty after 3/4 month. You will most likely not get it empty whithout charging and diving in this period of time. Do not worry about the battery, just make sure the unit keeps wet

Jan,
Believe me I'll try and get the 2n as wet as possible..

Hi DB,
You wanna know about Lithium Ion batteries!? Have a look at this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithium-ion_battery
Especially the part about Charging Procedures is interesting.
Cheers,

Hansjoerg,
Thanks, interesting, there is lots of confliction info on the web about Li-Ion batteries and their best maintenance. Overall they don't seem to like heat, hence the idea or removing Laptop batteries when not in use..
This is also a site packed with info :
http://batteryuniversity.com/

Hi DB,
What both websites agree upon is that the batteries should not be stored at full charge and that with "high" temperatures (24 Deg. C) die life of the battery is reduced the most, especially when at full charge.
I guess the conclusion to our discussion here and according to both websites:
(batteryuniversity.com / en.wikipedia.org)
1. Keep the Li-Ion batteries cool
2. Keep the charge somewhere between 40% and 60%
3. If the Li-Ion battery is completely discharged it could be damaged and may have to be replaced.
However always refer to the manufacturers recommendations in our case what HW recommends.

Hi,
And we recommend to recharge once before storing for a long period, but not keep the unit attached to a USB charger to avoid unnecessary cycling of the battery.
Recharge and store at room temperature.
The OSTC consumes very little power in Standby, with a full battery the unit can be stored for at least a year easily.

Matthias

Thanks Matthias,
I was hoping you would make a statement for HW.

Matthias,
Thanks for the info. FYI in the manual it states on page 13 "If you do not use the OSTC Mk.2 for an extended period of time,
you can leave it connected to the USB charger until next use."
That could be misleading..
Nice manual though, I am looking forward to trying my new 2n later this week

Hi,
Yes, maybe we should add a recommendation what is better. At room temperature, it does not make much difference. At higher temperatures is not recommended to have it attached to the charger. So in your case (Dahab), store it without the charger.

Matthias

Matthias,
Willdo thanks. In the UK the heat is not an issue Dahab currently 40+ deg

Keep up the good work Sir.
