Three bugs(?) in Firmware 2.20 / Drei Käfer(?) in Firmware 220

Post by Rob »

Hi there,

i found some bugs in Firmware Version 220.

First:
The easy one: in EEProm Bank 0 the "total number of cf used in firmware" is wrong!
I recieve 58.
But this was never the number of CF in Firmware, this was always "the last CF in firmware".

CF counting starts with 0 not with 1 (this seems to be a major problem in all the descriptions, not only with CF (perhaps also in code?).

Second:
In my last dive i got an never ending stop at 21m.
(maybe this is related to http://www.heinrichsweikamp.com/read.php?2,7782)

I did a sililar dive before were the stop times were ok.
What was different:
I prepared my OSTC with the following gases:

Selected Gas at begin of dive (2): 21/30
Gas 1: 12/55
Gas 2: 21/30
Gas 3: 31/35
Gas 4: 49/0 at 21m
Gas 5: 100/0 at 6m
Gas 6: 30/0

The Gasses 2, 4, 5 where shown as used (color in the gaslist)
Active Gases were 2,3,4,5

But i decieded to use gas 2,3 and 5 during the dive
At 37m i changed the gas to Gas no 3 (TMX 31/35).

Third:
At the end of the dive i provoked some ppo2 high warnings
one warning i got is at 6,35m thats ok bit in the following i have several times when i was deeper then this and i recieved NO warning in the logfile.

Here is the profile data of the dive and my CF Settings.

Rob

Servus miteinander,

ich habe ein paar bugs in Firmware Version 2.20 gefunden.

Erstens:

Rob

I'm confused... We do not have any statement about your second issue from HW so far. Or did i miss something? We still don't know if it is a bug or a feature...

If a one minute stop is after 5 minutes still there then it is a bug. (Or the OSTC builds a small wormhole around itself)

Maybe the information with the used gasses and the detailed logbook helps HW to find and fix the problem.

Rob, you did not switch to gas G4 at 21m, right? And gas G4 was still active? So it could be a feature to tell you that there is a better gas available, then the one you've chosen...

I would like to see a function which asks me "Switch to Gas G4" (in your example gas G4 = 49/0) if i reach the 21m stopp. Then i can decide to say "yes" or "no". If i say no i should still be able to switch to the gas (or another) manualy...

So hopefully HW will turn this "bug" into a "feature"... ;)

No i dont, i decided to use the 30/35
but this is the situation when you have planned to use a 21m gas (the EAN49) but you lost it.
I had the feeling that a normal deco was shown after i switched back to the 21/3x (active gas and first gas) that i used and one reason for the problem is that i switched to a gas that the OSTC is not using for its decoplan.

The OSTC should calculate with the gas that is used(selected) at the moment.
It can show me that there is a better gas (this is done in the lower left oft the ostc) but the decompression stop of one minute must diappear when the deco with the selected gas is done.

Actually, what you ask for is confusing (for the computer): You decided not to use Gas4. But you never tell the OSTC...

What I try to explain is the computer cannot read your mind and guess that, and it can neither assume you won't go deeper again and need Gas#4 at some later time. So it is unable to automatically deselect Gas#4 for you.

Btw, we are concerned by this issue. The next firmware will most probably display the gas change delay with a timer, around the changing depth (eg. +/- 1.5 m), and then go silent afterward.

How can i tell this to the computer? Under Water, not at the surface.

Or should i switch to Gas4 and then immediately switch back to another gas?

Sorry, this is somthing the computer shuld not do.
But it shuld remove a one minute dekostop after 5 minutes.
I dont ask for automaitcally select or deselect of gasses.
I just want to have a correct dekoplan shown in the display.
An that includes that a deco stop is cleard when the dekotime in the stopdepth is over.

As you can see in the profiledata i had for more than 6 minutes no dekoinformation shown on my computer only this silly stop 1 min at 21m.
This stop was gone when i start messing around with selecting other gasses,
gasses i dint breath, you can see i switched to the 30/35 before i reached the 21m stop depth.

Hello,

i haven't dived my MK2 with FW 2.2 but i did some simulations and mine showed the exact same behaviour.
This behaviour was known before with CF 55 set to > 0 min.
Now it happens with CF 55 set to 0 min aswell.

If this behaviour is programmed by intention there should be a CF to switch it off.
I you loose an active gas and you are not aware of this behaviour you might waste some valuable time or even run out of usable gas.

I also had some issues when not switching to O2 at 6m lately. As this has the first and only OC dive in more than a year and I'm not going to do this again I'm not able to reproduce this. Just a confirmation of the behavior described above.

I also had only the 6m stop (and nothing more!) in my deco plan but after ignoring the 6m stop the unit showed 1min @3m suddenly followed by a cleared deco shortly after. The unit might still be set to last stop @6m, but I'm not sure about this. So it seems the unit is able to ignore the gas switch in some way?

I would like to see something like this:

It appears whenever you reach a stop matching a defined gas, for example EAN50@21m

It should disappear automatically after 30 seconds and OSTC should calculate the decoplan without the recommended gas, unless i press yes or i do switch the gas manually later.

There has already been a lot of discussion regarding prompts to switch gas and it was stated that HW policy is to ensure at least 3 button presses before a gas switch and that the OSTC isn't designed to make or prompt decisions. Flogging a dead horse I'm I'm afraid.

that's ok to me!
But it is not ok to me when the unit freezes the deco-calculation when no gas-switching happens.

That's ok for me too, but then i need no informations nor notifications about better gas or possible gas switch at all...

No, please don't! BTW: 30s is just much to short for a notification and a following (possible) gas switch.

I agree that the current behavior is not perfect at all, but please lets find other solutions!

Hi there,

sorry that my bug report switches to a feature request.
That was not in my mind when i wrote the report.
I gave all the information and ideas i have, to make it easier to find or solve the bugs.

When the "non switch" to the dekogas is the problem, how about "enter the gas selection dialog, select a gas (even when the gas is the actual used gas) and thats the gas the ostc calculates instead of the suggested one.
(This is just a idea, not a feature request)

And PLEASE do me a favour, dont turn the good ostc firmware into a "deko dodo" with funny pics and dialogs everywhere. Ok, for me the Gas switch dialog could be a bit bigger (in size) i need glasses for reading and sometimes the gas switch or stopwatch reset needs to much time to identify. (Yes i have reading glasses in my masks, but...)

Best regards
Rob

That's not the idea of my idea ;)

But the question is: Will a future firmware support the diver during his/her dive or not, and how? I don't need any dialogs about gas switching at all, because i do the gas switches when i want. But then we don't need any yellow blinking gases or delays too! IMHO

@solodiver: 30 seconds are enough to recognize a notification. Especially during ascent a diver will check the computer quite often, just because not to miss a stopp depth or to check ascent rate... Anyway i don't stick to 30 seconds, this could be 45 or 60 seconds aswell, as long as i can say No within seconds...

And hey - it's just an idea to keep a discussion alive :)

Why not adding the ability to disable (enable?) gases in the water? In this case nothing in the current usability has to be changed (except the stucked deco ceiling described above).

It is already possible to disable and enable gases during the dive: Gaslist > More > Active? > Then you can select the gas of which you want to change the status and disable/enable with the right button!

Hi there,

the gas i used the 30/35 was active from the beginning of the dive.
but i failed to set a changedepth for this gas, so it stud at the color "blue" and not white as the other gasses.

regards
rob

Setting the changedepth to 0m is the same like deactivating the gas.

I think Rob knows that. Nevertheless the gas should work as well when you select it even if it is deactivated. The single problem is that the OSTC stuck at 21m when it should have recalculated deco using the gas you are currently breathing when you don't switch to another gas within a few minutes.

No, IMHO the deco should just be recalculated when a gas deactivated (or activated). But the deco ceiling should not get stuck when a change is not done but should allow to continue the dive with the current gas (which means longer deco times).

Cool, then there is no need for any (additional) change except removing this bug with the locked deco ceiling.

In fact I meant exactly what you wrote here. When you don't switch to an active deco gas, deco should be recalculated using the gas which is currently active after a few minutes. That is exactly how the Ostc behaved before... don't know were this bug comes from but I would be interested in a comment from Matthias or Christian on this topic!

Me too...

At this point i have another question: How is OSTC calculating the deco plan? Let's do a dive down to 60m for 20 Min with a TMX 18/45. As soon as i get into deco, my OSTC will calculate a deco plan. Is this plan only based on the actual breathing gas and recalculated whenever a gas change is done, or is the OSTC "looking into the future" and calculates the deco plan already with expected gas changes @21m and @6m, if i have activated G2:50/00@21m and G3:100/00@6m, for example?
