Hi guys,

got a bit of an issue
The screen of my OSTC 2n is dying.
I would like to send it back to HW so that they can have a look at it and repair/replace as needed but I would like to download my dives first just to make sure that i won't loose them

I am running Windows XP
Installed JDiveLog 2.16
As soon as I plugin the OSTC Windows identify something plugged in in COM Port 4
but JDiveLog does not

Have installed FTDI USB serial port

Any thoughts???

Hi Dimitris,
did you switched on your OSTC2n after you pluged in in the usb cable?
Press a the "menue" button on the ostc to turn it "on". (ok your screen is dead, but no matter).
Now try again in jdivelog to download data.

Is jDiveLog configured like this:

besides having it turned on.
Also make sure you install the usb driver from the FTDI website not from jdivelog.

Actually there is a lot of information on issues with jdive log in this forum. It pays to search before asking.

Uninstall the driver currently installed, then install the OSTC driver as described in the manual, THEN connect the OSTC.

The "plug and play" driver sourced from the internet directly by windows is NOT the one you need.

I'll upgrade my ubuntu box to 12.04 sometime next week I'll try to update the ubuntu manual then.

Yep, and your point is?

Dimitris already tried doing it with ubuntu and gave up, Now he's trying with xp.

With either of the two it's a relatively easy task... if you read the manual and follow it step by step. If he plugged the OSTC before installing the usb driver he'll get the behaviour he described above.

I agree if one reads the instructions its not really that difficult, but I think it is bad to talk about ubuntu in an XP thread. Not everyone is as computer savy as we are. It may actually confuse people.

I think your Ubunto thread is great. So if I need info on OSTC and Ubuntu I'll look in your thread and will also ask Ubunto questions there.

But thats only my two cents worth.

thanks for your help so far.

what I have tried is:

1. install rxtx drivers by copying file rxtxParallel.dll into C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin

2. installed the VCP ftdi driver from the ftdi web site

3. plug in the OSTC on my machine and switch it on and I can see COM4 port

4. installed jDivelog

5. went to settings, selected OSTC, COM4, OSTC Mk 2, 1.91-X


got a couple of questions

a. when installing jDivelog I can select to install RXTX 2.1 should I select that or not? (have tried both with no luck) my guess is that I shouldn't since I have already installed it

b. my understanding is that I need both RXTX and FTDI drivers correct?

c. from the two available FTDI drivers I need the VCP ones correct?

d. which manual you are talking about?

e. which of all drivers should I uninstall ???

Thats how I did it (WinXP)

1. Download and install the VCP driver from the FTDI website
2. Install jDiveLog
3. Configure as per image above but you need to choose the correct com port. jDive Log should actually recommend one for you but if that one doesn't work you have to try one of the others from the pull down menu
4. Plug-in your OSTC and switch it on
5. In the File Menu choose download from the dive computer

You don't need to copy any RXTX dll's

Uninstall everything and start from scratch again if it doesn't work.

The manual for the OSTC describes what you have to do to connect the DC. Its on the last page (at least in the german manual).

Btw. I use DivingLog. That works for me ever time.

the best I got was to get XP to talk to OSTC and get the OSTC in "Interface" mode
but although it said done at the end nothing was saved

during the installation of jdivelog i chose to install RXTX
and jdivelog could see COM4

when i tried to install jdivelog without installing RXTX jdivelog would not see the com port although Device manager did

Honestly, you are trying too hard.

1 Grab a pc where you haven't connected the OSTC
2 Install the driver at the bottom of this page:

The windows 32 version is this one

3 Download and install ANY compatible software.

If it were JDiveLog make sure you install the rxtx library.

4 exit JDiveLog

5 plug the ostc

6 Turn it ON and wait a bit

7 launch JDiveLog > go to settings >Dive computer >select port and protocol

8.> Sync/download

I'll repeat what I said before. If you plug the OSTC to the computer BEFORE you install the drier a generic windows driver gets associated with it. That, my friend, may be the source of your headaches.
