OSTC Plus won't switch on sometimes

Post by RonMacRae »

Hi,
I've had this problem a few times now. This time it caused me a problem so I thought I'd see if anyone else has the same problem.

Sometimes my OSTC Plus won't switch on when I pick it up and press either or both buttons. Normally if I just try later it works.

It always switches on when I get in the water.

However last weekend I needed to change my gas mix and I couldn't get it to power on. Eventually I had to remove and replace the battery and it came back to life.

I don't want to do this often as a) opening the battery case can allow water in and b) it now says the battery is 0%, even though it was recently charged. It gave me a red light for the next 4 dives saying the battery was empty. It wasn't.

Anyone else had this power on issue?
Anyone got a better resolution than try later or remove the battery?

Ron.

Hi Ron,

the OSTC feature a so-called "deep sleep" mode which reduces power consumption. Deep sleep is entered automatically after some time in normal sleep mode, i.e. display off. To awake an OSTC from deep sleep, it needs to be moved (liftet, tilted). About 5 seconds after movement, it starts to react on button presses and thus can be turned on. The reason behind this procedure is that in deep sleep the buttons are not polled because their electronics consume quite a bit of power - much more than the acceleration sensor.

Ralph,
I knew that. I was waving it about like an idiot. I shook it like I was mixing a cocktail. Was tempted to try banging it against something, but decided not to. How much movement should be required?

Hi Ron,

maybe your OSTC didn't awake because it got sick on its treatment before? ;-)

Normally, taking it out of the dive box gives enough movement and time for the OSTC to become reactive on the buttons. Maybe the accelerometer is a little bit deaf on yours. You can check it by performing a compas calibration - while rolling the OSTC around its axis the X/Y/Z values should reflect the movements.
