OSTC2 Stuck in Dive Mode at 1m
OSTC2 Stuck in Dive Mode at 1m
Hi, I arrived back from a trip abroad by air, and have just found that my OSTC2 is stuck in dive mode at 1m. When I first switched it on, it kept on restarting and scrolling through pages, then settled into dive mode and will not go back to surface mode. Is there any way of resetting the device? If I let the battery run completely down, will that do any damage? Grateful for any help or advice on this.

Re: OSTC2 Stuck in Dive Mode
Something similar happened to me with a previous version of the firmware. Only for me it was while I was doing my 5m safety stop. Fortunately I had a backup computer to see me safely to the end of the dive.
The advice I was given was to let the battery run down (I also have an OSTC2 with non-replaceable battery) and the software will automatically reboot.
Once this happens you can recharge the battery as normal and everything should return to normal functioning.
It would be worth reporting what firmware you are running and the exact details on the screen of your OSTC2, e.g. by a photo, to this forum to provide further details to the software developers should there be a bug which caused the hangup.

Re: OSTC2 Stuck in Dive Mode
Hi Laurie, perfect answer, thanks in the name of HW!
It is save to let the OSTC run down its battery, as a low-voltage protection kicks in before the battery would go into destructive deep discharge. Once the screen has turned dark, recharge the OSTC and then try to turn it on again. If not at latest firmware level, please update. Meanwhile: is the OSTC operable while it hangs in dive mode, i.e. does it respond to button presses?
best regards,
Ralph

Re: OSTC2 Stuck in Dive Mode
Hi Gents,
I could not see any alternative to letting the battery run down, hence the delay in updating this thread. I am pleased to report that it proceeded exactly as advised - the unit finally shut down, and having recharged it, it appears to be now working normally, with no loss of data.
Although obviously I did not dive it, whilst stuck in dive mode, the buttons did appear to be working. I attach a photo of the computer before it finally rebooted.
I think the problem occurred because I keep it in a plastic box, and as cabin pressure in the plane reduced, it may have caused a drop in pressure inside the box when the aircraft descended. I shall now be drilling a small hole in the box before flying again!
The Firmware is v215 - I must confess I had not really been keeping up with updates, which I think are now up to v305, so I shall have a go at that.
Thank you both for taking the trouble to respond to my cry for help!
Andy

Re: OSTC2 Stuck in Dive Mode
Hi Andy,
The OSTC does not have water contacts. That means it only can measure the pressure and uses a finely tuned algorithm to detect if it has to enter dive mode or not. There are a lot of details that go into this algorithm. Just think about someone standing in the water with the computer at 0.3m depth for a longer period before starting the dive. In your case the algorithm finally decided that your computer starts diving.
An air-tight container is indeed not recommended when flying.
regards,
Matthias
