OSTC MK2 now it's the 2N

Scott, you're right. Today I see this as a negative and that's why I'm looking to buy the MK2 instead of the 2N!
I would also appreciate if Matthias may highlight the pro's of the 2N, that would maybe help me change my mind...

As a user, I prefer the ability to change the battery when required. However, lets put in perspective that the new lithium battery will only need to be changed once in the next 5 to 10 years vs the mk2's primary that may require it more often. So, lets not take it out of context. Realistically it will be a bugger once in a blue moon.

Now when comparing the N2 vs its peers, I believe that it wins hands down.


I believe you already know this as you are buying an OSTC so no need to rumble about it.

If one wants to have a MK2 really bad I might be open to exchange my one to a N2. I do not care about this battery thing that much and I like the micro USB. The bigger issue IMHO is, that we're still not really sure about all the differences between the two units...

i'd be happy to switch my mk2 with an 2n.
i bought mine just about 2-3 months ago and made about 10 dives with it at the most.

i am a little dissapointed, that heinrichsweikamp didn't tell us about the new 2n on the boot-expo or on the website...

Is it really a problem to get a new Li battery replaced every 5-10 years ?
I would think by then we wll be using the new OSTC 5n

There's another very important reason to have removable batteries. As without the lithium battery being removed it can't be posted by airmail, I'm not sure if this is the same with all countries. But in Australia I'm having trouble returning mine which is faulty to HW. I'm currently finding out if I can remove the battery myself.

Changes have recently been made to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Technical Instructions for the Transport of Dangerous Goods by Air resulting in the classification of all lithium batteries as dangerous goods.

Can I send a lithium battery or an item containing a lithium battery overseas?
No. Lithium Batteries cannot be carried by air or in overseas mail.

@Alex: I wouldn't make an elephant out of a mosquito in this case - just say nothing and nobody will check if the OSTC is containing a Lithium or a Nimh-battery and everything is ok Furthermore: The unit has been shipped to Australia once before - and I'm quite sure that didn't happen by ship.

I am afraid Australia Post is being bloody minded cause according to IATA Regulations Li-Ion batteries can be sent without Lithium battery label and documentation if they are:
- Installed in the equipment
- The cell has =< 20Wh
- The battery/pack =< 100Wh

You might be able to send the 2N with DHL. As opposed to Australia Post DHL Australia does not say that the would not ship Li-Ion batteries.

Had a long conversation with Sydney CBD Australian Post, they have tighter restrictions than the standard IATA as they don't have the resource to ensure correct labelling etc of Lithium batteries. If you have a business account though they will send them.

I can use Packsend but they want $70 to post it! I've took the battery out and posted it with AusPost for $12. So it looks like it's just down to the courier service whether they agree to take them or not.

As for the post office not knowing whether it's a lith or a Nimh battery, apparantly they have scanners at the airport to detect this, and the package will get returned.
