looking for new computer
looking for new computer
Hi, I'm looking for a new computer, and i came to this site by chance (a divernet article about Mark Ellyatt and his gear).
This sounds like the perfect computer: everything can be adapted to my own needs.
No backlight needed in the murky dutch waters. No more blinding myself with the reflection of my light on the computer.
The computer can grow with me in my divingskills.
I only found one disadvantage: not gas integrated (yet).
Is this a computer wich is also suitable for recreational diving, i'm not at a techdive level, not yet. But i find it very interesting, and i think i will go that route when i'm up to it.
So, should i order one?

Hi Ivar,
the OSTC is of course also usable for recreational diving like any other computer capable for tec-diving.
The advantage of a tec-computer is you can still use it when you eventually go for tec-diving as said.
They are working on a wireless air-integration and i believe older OSTC's can be upgraded most propably.
The only other computer with a bionic display i'm aware of is two times more expensive and you have to pay for the software additionally which is included in the OSTC.

Hello Ivar,
We do not recommend the OSTC for beginners because so many parameters can be adjusted that the unit will hardly be usable and/or dangerous compared to other computers.
In bad visibility an OLED display is outstanding against LCD outputs.

Matthias

But as long as i don't change the parameters to less safe levels it should do fine.
And i don't dive 'on my computer', when i do deeper dives, wich will not be much deeper than 30 meters, i will plan and execute with the tables i have from my diving organisation (NOB/CMAS).
I am very interested in the customising of the display, just getting the things on it wich i think are important.
I would really like to see the computer in real life.
Is there someone with one living near holland, preferrably between Wilhelmshafen, Bremen, Osnabruck and Arnheim?
Or somewhere in Holland?

Re: looking for new computer
These are the parameters i would change:
CF0: I think to 100 cm
CF1: 30 cm if possible: we end our dives here very shallow, my alladin computer has once logged 4 dives in one time
CF2: Maybe
CF3: Maybe
CF4: Maybe
CF5: Maybe to 5
CF20: maybe
CF21: Maybe
CF22: Maybe
CF29: We also do the stop between 3m and 6m, How does it react to not just stopping at 3m but swimming along between 3m and 6m? Does it reset the clock when i go back from 3m to 6m? When i should set it to 4m will it accept the stop when i reach 3m before the time runs out?
For the rest: no changes. Not until i have more understanding of the subjects and experience with the computer compared to the divetables.

The OSTC will continue calculations, that means the displayed 3m stop will be longer then showed at the beginning of the ascend.

No. Violating a displayed stop will result in a warning, of course. You have to descent to the displayed stop ASAP to avoid decompression problems.
