Ascent rate indicator

Post by Olaf70 »

I would like to have a graphical ascent rate indicator.
For some reason I find it easier to control my ascent using a graphic indicator then reading the letters. Just like some cars have a digital speedometer and where I also prefer a normal meter.

I hope that something this small could be implemented in a future version.

Hi Olaf,

I'd be happy to include this into the firmware - it's an easy task. But I'm a lousy graphics designer :) It would help if someone suggests the size, position and design of the arrows, bargraph or icons...

Hallo,
ich würde darum bitten die Grafiken uber CF zuschaltbar (anschaltbar) zu machen.
Die Warnung "hohe Aufstiegsgeschwindigkeit" lässt sich ja bereits einstellen und farbig darstellen.

by goggle ...

I would ask the question about CF switchable graphics make (connectable).
The warning "high rate of ascent" can already adjust color and pose.

Hello All,

I think the Ascent rate indicator would be very helpfull.

Maybe it could look like this.

Hmmmmm, too much complicated.
I propose a simple rectangle that goes up to 20m/s filled with four distinct bars each representing 5m/s. When the ascent speed is lower or equal than 10m/s bars are green then orange and when it's more than 20m/s red.

Place it near the depth indication.

You mean something like this.

Yes but with a smaller indicator, just four thick lines. Just the height of the depth letters.
Green would go up to 10m/s included.
Yellow from 10,1 to 15m/s
Red from 15.1 to xxxm/s

I think the developer had to tell how many pixels are availeble.
So then a nice set up can be made.

Personally i think its better to decrease the collors with 2.5 m/min

Looks really nice likte that and the position is very nice as well.

Hope to see this on the next release. Won't mind being the beta tester on this.

Hi all,

I am not sure if there is that much added value in a graph. As it is today, if I see on the 2N that the Ascent Rate is red, I slow down, whether its yellow or a little bit red or green is neither here nor there. Either my ascent rate is too high or not.

However I'd be more than happy to beta test.
Cheers,

I think it is something personal and I love gadgets.

I had a stinger, n2 and a shearwater predator on one arm (vision on the other). And I have no idea how sensitive the setting is on the predator think it was pretty sensitive with the bars cause when the bars raised the n2 didn't change the speed until I had already compensated, the stinger bars were not that usable (too small and I preferred the bigger display of the others). And I really liked the smooth working of the graph on the predator.

Love to have a reason to get back to Egypt to beta test it again.

Greetings Olaf.

Hi,

On the one hand is the graphic output, on the other hand is the code behind it. Right now the velocity display is updated every two seconds with the average speed of two seconds. This has been introduced to avoid ascend warning if you just move your arm to the inflator or dry suit release valve.

Right now, the OSTC also displays the descend speed. This is not useful with a graphic output, isn't it.

If you really go for this feature then there should be a choice if one wants the numeric _OR_ graphical display. In this case also the issue in placing the graphical indicator and the available space would be no issue anymore.

Please remember that the ascent speed turns red already when it exceeds a specific value...

Hi,

I don't really need a graphical ascent rate indicator, because the numerical version is ok for me - so I am with solodiver in this case.
On the other hand, I found that it reacts very slowly. Wouldn't it be possible to change "Right now the velocity display is updated every two seconds with the average speed of two seconds" to an update every one or 1.5s with the average speed of the last one to 1.5s to make that a little bit faster without the negative reaction of a warning when moving your arm upwards fast?

I too prefer the numerical display and would like to be able to turn off a graphic.

I can't see the advantage in reducing the refresh rate from 2 to 1.5 secs, what's going to happen in half a second that you need to know about half a second earlier? Seems to be change for the sake of change.

I have a smartcom as backup. It drives me up the wall cause it beeps at me if I just think about ascending (a bit like putting on weight when thinking about chocolate).

- Pleeeeeas, I don't need a 2N that flashes at me red when I think about ascending.
- I prefer my display to be "uncluttered" the option to turn off the graphic display would have to be a must.

if You really have to have bells and whistles - please make it optional by offering possibility of staying with numerical display or this graphical display. I personally prefer numerical, which is already color coded.
If I may suggest - let's follow KISS principle ...

Well, either I am able to do very slow ascents all the time, or my old aladin pro ultra was not as sensitive as your smartcom, Hansjoerg!?
I am with you, that a unit that is too sensitive is not good either. But in my opinion, the ostc is not sensitive enough - I had to make a much too fast ascent (just my feeling) to get a warning from the unit...

Just a remark to all those functions to be controlled via CF: Please please include an option to safe at least all those unimportant CF's during the update process!!!!! I would really be pissed to check every single CF all the time when doing an update, especially if there are CF's like graphical or numerical ascent indicator - cave bailout etc.

Did you made a adjustment to the OSTC.
I have set mine to 10 m/min, standard was 15 m/min.
And 15 m/min is to fast.

Yep, I tried 7m/min and 10m/min (now standard) - doesn't really change anything. In my opinion, the reaction time of the unit is just a little bit too slow (You can also see this when you are ascending and have a glance at the displayed speed).

Hi,

The velocity display has been programmed to be updated quite slowly to balance your "arm-only" movements when ascending from a wreck, for example.
It's not intent to be used to control the speed for short periods (a few meters) of ascends during the bottom time part of the dive. This can be changed, of course. I think best is to add two new CF here:
a) sensitivity (from 2x/second to every 2seconds) and
b) use graphical scale or not
The suggestion from dennis (simple boxes) has the advantage that the thresholds for turning the scale into red (Or any other color) can be applied easier then to a graphic icon.

Matthias
