Post by riesroni »

Hello, I'm new here and i have a question.

Is it wise to take the new Frog computer, I am a novice diver.

It's wise to take it just for being a HW's computer!

As I read you are a novice diver and I would say that this computer will satisfy all your present requirements and it will be ok for a long while of your scuba career ;)

One thing to consider though
- No air integration

Richard,

That depends on you. A large number of recreational divers use an air integrated dive computer. That means there is a sensor attached to the tank that measures the pressure and sends it to the diving computer, making your DC also the pressure gauge.

There are as many opinions as there are divers on whether air integration is good or bad. I don't know any tech divers that use it.

I very strongly recommend you do some more research on the various dive computers to find out which one is right for you. Best bet is to also ask around your diving buddies and when you narrowed down your choice try them out diving.

Of course its also a question of money.
Cheers,

Hi Richard,

I can't give a recommendation here, this is something you should also discuss with your buddies or instructor. They know you, your equipment and experience. Especially for novice divers there are so many options in the market - not unlikely that a competitor products fits better...

If you decide for a frog in the end, it's really appreciated :-) I think we start shipping in March.

Cheers,
Matthias

The Frog I've seen on the "Boot" exhibition had holes to be equipped with bungees.

NO! If You are novice diver!
You shoud have simple equipment!
This type of display is fantastic
'cause all alerts You can see in red
and visibility of this kind of display
is great. Novice diver sometimes forget
to look what is on dive comp specially
with LCD B&W display without good
light (ZOOP comp exp.).

I disagree with you. I cannot see why a noivce diver should not use air integration. If anything having a seperate pressure gauge will increase the likelyhood of forgetting to look at it.

It is the responsability of the diver to check his computer and/or pressure gauge. Air integration or not is not going to take the responsability away from him/her.

About air integration.

I belong to two very large and active scuba clubs. It is not uncommon to hear from someone complaining about their air integrated computer.

In contrast I have never seen a failed gauge.

Analogue gauges are found on every household in the world (think of your gas and water meters). They simply work.

In contrast, 100% of the aggregated dive computer market (i.e the total number of dive computers sold each year) is the equivalent 15 minutes of production from one of the large smartphone manufacturers.

Only a fraction of those have air integration....

I for one don't want anything to do with a wireless transmitter under water.

... About Air integration

i am using air integrated divecomputers since more than 10 years.
in that time i didnt have any problems with the air integration.
There are also a lot of people i know with air integrated computers - without any problems.
In that time i had 7 (seven) mechaical perssure gauges with serious damages.

Apart from that, i think it is more save and less taskload when i am at 80m with several stages and camera, concentrated on taking pictures, to have the pressure gauge on my wrist to have my gas consumption at a glance, without fishing out my pressuregauge.

Rob

It is not a question of one OR the other: I have one AND the other! I check my current air situation regularly during the dive on my wrist. From time to time I also compare this value with my pressure gauge to make sure everything is okay: some kind of personal redundancy check. In my opinion, air integration is a important feature as well as the mechanical pressure gauge.

I never had problems with my pressure gauge and wireless tank sensor.

As this is really a philosophical question, I would not expect that this issue would be resolved in this thread.

I did refer to Air Integration because a large number of diving computers support it either over the air or as pressure gauge.

In the end it is up to the diver to make a decision whether this technology is right form him/her. In any case the diver hast to be made aware of the fact that
a. Air integration exists
b. Neither the frog or the 2N support it.

I do not even have any pressure gauge on my back mounted tanks and just these small mini gauges on my stages which could barely be read in the water...
