Salinity settings

Post by kaheksa »

Do you guys change the salinity settings on the computer when going from fresh water to salt water?

What settings do you use for the Med, Atlantic ocean and Red sea?

Over here in the Baltic the water is almost fresh so I keep it at 1.00kg/l

I leave mine at default. Deco is worked out according to absolute pressure so this will just be a cosmetic change for the displayed depth.

Hi,

With my OSTC3 I set the salinity on:

Mediterranee sea, Indian Oceans: 1.03

Red Sea: 1.04

Everything is OK with these settings,

Cheers ;)

As jbcool said the salinity setting is just cosmetic since OSTC uses absolute pressure to calculate tissue saturation. However, when I've compared the depth shown on my OSTC with the depth on my buddy's computer it appears that most assume a salinity of 1.02kg/l for computers that do not provide the ability to change water salinity.

The setting you choose depends on whether you want to record dive depths similar to your buddy (unless they also have an OSTC) or the real(?) depth.
Happy diving,

Hi all,

Some computer use the EN 13319 norm for the salinity which is the european standard. The value is 1020 g/dm3 as you said Laurie-the-Knot.
