OSTC Plus - Battery Cap Problem

Post by Rowmcc »

I bought my OSTC Plus from Deep Ideas back in August 2017 and have been very happy with it until the recent firmware update from 2.97 SP1 to 3.05.

The firmware caused my computer to freeze, not turn on when submerged in water (at any depth) and I had to re-flash the firmware multiple times before it returned to an, apparently, 'normal' state.

The firmware is the first problem.

The battery cap is my second problem. After the 2nd dive where the computer wouldn't turn on, I had no other choice but to remove the battery cap, something I have had no reason to do in the 2 years I've had it as the rechargeable one (to date) hasn't given me any problem. I removed the cap, took the battery out and put a fresh 1.5V standard Duracell AA battery back in and attempted to put the cap back in.

The cap won't screw back in.

Well, the cap was screwed in and so it should be possible to get it in again. The O-Ring is quite stiff, so make sure to push the cap inwards and then start turning. Apply some grease on the O-Ring and feel the beginning of the thread by turning it backwards a bit.

Hi Matthias,
I've tried a bit of silicone grease and it gets so far but then stops. Looking at the cap when it stops, it doesn't look level with the housing. Is this right? Shouldn't it be parallel to it, i.e. flat?

Hi,

Depending on the battery, the cap is not completely flat with the housing. 0,5mm are no problem. If you can still see the O-Ring, it's (obliviously) not ok.

Hi Matthias,

The cap doesn't screw in all the way as most of the o-ring still shows.

Bad luck, then your battery is probably too long. That's usually the case when a battery has a built-in undervoltage protection, which is not needed as the OSTC already has it by itself. This protection is not really built into the battery, but rather appended to it, making the overall assembly become too long.

Hi Ralph,
It's not possible for the battery to be too long as the battery I'm putting back in, is the exact same battery that's been in there for the last 2+ years.

Matthias,
I've managed to get the cap back in/on and screwed down properly. Looking at the thread inside the housing, it's not right; takes millimetre precision to get the cap and housing threads to line-up correctly.
