6th Gaz - V 1.90

Post by Olivier »

Hi all,

When selecting the 6th gaz during a dive, I don't find the submenu very clear and easy to use.

More precisely, after having done my mix (O2 + / -, He + / -, that's easy), I press the left button to go further on and I have one single option: "Active?". Selecting it takes you to a menu (as far as I understand) that show you which of the first five gaz are active ?? Not clear at all, yesterday night as I had to reconfigure my 6th gaz, it beats me: I thought that "Active" entrance was related to the 6th gaz I was trying to select... It tooks me too much try to understand that I had to go back to the first line to select that 6th gaz...

I'd propose:
- Instead of that "Active" button, put a "Select" button to... select the 6th gaz (that's easy to understand)
- Put that "Active" submenu in the first pane: "Gazlist" would show you a menu: G1->G5, G6, Active?
- Would it be too much to be able to act on that "Active" list ? Selecting a gaz would toggle active / non active.

Hope my message is understandable ;-)

Thanks for your stunning computer

the active menu is used to kick gases that are no longer available (and thus adjust the decompression calcs) or activate gases that were not available but now are going to be used.

It somewhat has to do with the 6th gas but wouldn't mind if it was accessible through other means.

About your 6th gas... modify the O2 and He and then go to the top and select.

Takes a bit of playing to understand the logic but once you've got it you'll always remember it.

(The way I use the "active?" bit is that I would program my buddy's tanks but not activate them. If something happens to my gas and I start using his I don't need to program a gas during stress I just need to activate his gases and and deactivate my lost gas)

Hi dmainou,

can't follow you here ???
When i program a 6th gas and select "activate?" the newly defined gas is gone ???

Hi Reiner

I'm at work so can't spend a lot of time being too specific but can follow up later if you have more q's. Bare in mind I'm doing this from memory so take it with a pinch of salt.

You need to differentiate between the Gas 6 "function" and the Active? "Menu"

This is a picture of the previous behaviour in 1.80:

https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/D ... directlink

The user manipulated the O2+/- and the He+/- lines to configure gas 6 and then go UP to the first line and select "enter" to start using gas 6 and exit the menu.

That behaviour hasn't changed.

Now the question is why are you using a gas that you didn't programmed in the very beginning? The answer may be that you forgot and there is no pannic and therefore no big deal. However, another possible answer is that you lost one or more gases.

The problem at this point in time is that your deco obligation is incorporating all of your active gases to get you out of the water. The computer will kick out of the deco calculations any gas you are supposed to use at a certain depth and you haven't used. However common sense will tell you that the sallow part of the deco will be extended as a result of this inefficient deactivation of the gasses. Wouldn't it be nice that if you just suffered the loss of one or two gases to have the ability to kick them out and have your deco recalculated based on the remaining ones then and there as opposed to doing it in parts as you ascend?

Even better, to be able activate plan B such as the exact gases that your buddy is carrying by pre programming his gases on your spare ones but not activate them unless they are needed?

Therefore, enter the "Active?" menu. If you use the "menu" button to highlight "Activate?" and then press "enter" a menu with gases 1 to 5/6 will appear. Some gases are blue and some are white. By pressing enter on any of them you will turn some ON (white) or OFF (Dark Blue).

Once you exit the menu the decompression obligation will be recalculated based on those gases active at the time.

You do not need to manipulate gas 6 to manipulate the Active? menu. If you are diving G1 Nx50% and G2 Air and all other off and you loose with your Nx (such as a stuck valve) you can switch back/stay on your G2 and then kick G1.

Therefore all deco obligations will be calculated solely based on G2.

You could activate the previously programmed but not active G3 100% O2 that is hanging at 6m just in case or you could use the gas 6 settings to enter the TC xx/yy that a kind diver has just donated you.

The sky is the limit.

I hope this helps.

PS. We really need an online manual/"drupal book" where we can contribute with documentation.

Hi dmainou,

the system is more clear to me know but it will still cause confusion in my opinion.
On the other hand i have no idea how to improve it.
Maybe rename the option "activate?" to "other gases" ?

Thanks for the explanation, Reiner

Hi all,

Definitely room for improvement here. We have the following restrictions:
- max. 6 menu items
- max. 8 letters space/menu entry

Cheers,

Kick Gas or KickGas?

maybe move it somewhere else?

A suggestion:

When diving, selecting "menu" gives the following menu:

- Gaslist
- Gas 6
- other item as expected (Decoplan, Display and Exit)

When selecting Gaslist:
- G1 -> G5 as expected
- A sixth item: "Active?" (instead of "More" )

When selecting "Gas 6":
- same as now
- replace "Active?" with "Select"

What do you think ?

How about bringing it to the main menu?

1 Gaslist
2 Decoplan
3 (rolling function)
4 Display
5 Active?/KickGas?
6 Exit
